Australian English Curriculum Aligned Activities for Every Year Level
What does the English Curriculum cover for each year level? We're so glad you asked!
Whether you're teaching English in year 1 or year 6 (or any year level in between), Teach Starter has the curriculum covered. Take a look at what's in store for your lesson plans and your classroom.
Foundation (Prep)
In Foundation resources from Teach Starter, students are introduced to foundational language and literacy skills. This year's curriculum is crucial as it provides a solid foundation for students' literacy development in the following years.
Teach Starter's resources will help you teach your foundation or prep students to recognise and produce sounds, letters and words and develop basic reading and writing skills.
Worksheets and games in this curriculum-aligned collection cover the purposes of different texts and engage in shared reading and storytelling activities to help your prep students get hooked on reading!
Year 1
Year 1 English builds upon the foundational skills developed in Foundation. Students continue to refine their reading and writing abilities, focusing on phonics, decoding, and fluency. They begin to read simple texts independently and develop their vocabulary and comprehension skills.
In writing, year 1 students learn to construct simple sentences, use capital letters and full stops, and express ideas through words and illustrations. This year's curriculum is important as it establishes fundamental reading and writing skills, enabling students to become more confident readers and writers.
Year 2
In Year 2, students expand their reading and writing skills, and the worksheets in this collection will allow you to explore a range of texts with your students, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
Work with your class to develop comprehension strategies to understand and interpret texts more deeply and learn about different text structures and begin to write more complex sentences and paragraphs.
Additionally, you'll find literacy resources designed to teach your year 2 class about grammar, punctuation and spelling rules, strengthening students' literacy skills and building their ability to express ideas more effectively.
Year 3
Year 3 English curriculum resources focus on developing students' reading, writing, speaking and listening skills across various text types and genres.
Explore resources to help students learn to analyse and evaluate texts, make predictions and infer meaning in their reading.
Develop your students' understanding of narrative and descriptive writing, as well as persuasive and informative writing.
Our spelling and grammar resources will help students learn about plurals, verb tenses and punctuation marks and expand their vocabulary.
Our curriculum-aligned options for year 3 emphasise critical thinking and communication skills, encouraging students to become more independent and thoughtful readers and writers.
Year 4
Teach Starter's year 4 reading and writing resources help students further refine their reading and writing abilities.
They explore a broader range of texts — including literature, digital media and visual texts — and work on analysing and evaluating texts, identifying the author's purpose and drawing conclusions.
Explore worksheets and more to help your students develop their narrative, persuasive, informative and descriptive writing skills, focusing on organisation, cohesion and language features. You'll also find support for your lesson plans to deepen their understanding of grammar, vocabulary and spelling patterns.
Year 4 encourages students to become more proficient in analysing and creating texts, fostering their creativity and critical thinking skills, and this collection has you covered!
Year 5
The Australian English curriculum in year 5 emphasises higher-level comprehension and composition skills, and Teach Starter's year 5 reading resources allow students to engage with more complex texts, including novels, plays and multimodal texts.
Students can analyse themes, viewpoints and literary techniques in their reading.
Our year 5 writing resources allow students to plan, draft, revise and edit their work, incorporating various text structures and literary devices. The resources also help students expand their vocabulary, grammar and spelling knowledge.
Year 6
In the final year of primary school, Year 6 students consolidate their language skills in preparation for secondary school.
Teach Starter's year 6 reading and writing resources will help your students engage with various texts — including those that present different perspectives and challenge ideas.
Build advanced comprehension strategies — such as inference, synthesis and evaluation — and refine their writing skills by exploring different genres, styles and voices. Grammar, vocabulary and spelling are all covered with various options available.
