What Is Area? A Kid-Friendly Definition
When introducing a concept in the math classroom for the first time, having a kid-friendly definition on hand can be helpful to start the lesson. Here's one that our teacher team likes to use!
Area is the measure of space inside of a shape. Different shapes can have different areas, depending on their size and dimensions.
How to Find Area — A Simple Equation
Finding the area of a particular shape requires our students first know how to measure the length and the width of a particular object. What happens next will depend on the shape.
- For squares and rectangles, you can multiply the length by the width, using the formula Area = Length × Width
- For triangles, the area is calculated using the formula Area = 0.5 × Base × Height
- For circles, the area is calculated using the formula Area = π × Radius²
The measurement of an area is expressed in square units, such as square centimeters (cm²), square meters (m²), square feet (ft²), etc.
Area vs. Perimeter — What's the Difference?
Teaching perimeter often comes alongside teaching students to measure the area of an object. So what's the difference?
- Area — As we already mentioned, the area of an object is a measurement of the space inside the shape.
- Perimeter — The perimeter of an object, on the other hand, represents the measurement of the total length of the sides of a shape.
