Line Plot With Fractions – 4th and 5th Grade Math Activity

Are you looking for an easy-to-implement activity in your math centers? Or, possibly, you are looking for a collection of questions you can use with your entire class. We understand that drawing line plots to share with students can be a bit time-consuming, so we’ve done the hard work for you and have a set of teacher-created task cards to help your students analyze different line plots with fractions.

With this printable activity designed for 4th and 5th grade students, you will find 9 pages that include:

  • A set of 24 task cards, each with a question and a line plot that uses ¼ increments
  • A recording sheet for students to write down their answers to each question
  • An answer key

As students work through the questions within this resource, students will analyze different line plots and answer questions such as:

  • How many more students spent an hour or more on homework than less than an hour?
  • What is the total amount of water given to the plants?
  • How many bags of cherries weigh more than 2 pounds?

To answer some of the questions, students must be able to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with denominators of 2, 3 and 4.

If you are looking to change up some of the questions for your students, an editable Google Slides file is included to make altering the text a breeze!

How to Use Our Line Plot Task Cards

Are you looking for some fun ways to use traditional task cards in your classroom? Check out some of these ideas to get your students thinking and having fun at the same time!

🛴 Scoot Activity

Place the cards around the room in numerical order and distribute recording sheets to each student. Assign students or pairs to a starting point card. After reviewing the card, they can record their answer in the corresponding space on their paper. When the teacher shouts “SCOOT!”, students can rotate to the next card until they return to their starting point.

❓Quiz, Quiz, Trade

Quiz, Quiz, Trade is perfect for a whole class activity. Here’s how it works – each student gets a task card and walks around the room (you can even play music to add to the fun!). When the teacher says freeze or the music stops, students pair up and answer each other’s questions. After they’ve responded, they switch cards and continue the process.

🎲 Game Integration

Another simple way to use your task cards is with any board game. Before moving a piece or taking a turn, students must answer one of the task card questions.
