DIY Bulletin Board Tips for Teachers — From Teachers
Our Teach Starter teacher team has put up many a bulletin board over all the years in classrooms from Texas to Georgia to Indiana, so before you download your next bulletin board kit, we need to divulge a few hard-earned tips!
- Use a Fabric Backdrop — Bulletin board paper is great, but 16-year teaching veteran Randi Smith kept some bulletin board fabric up for years because fabric holds up and lasts forever.
- Don’t Staple Cutouts to Your Bulletin Board Immediately — Instead, Smith suggests using thumbtacks so you can step back, eye up what’s level and what isn’t, then move things around.
- Start Hanging Words in the Middle — This tip comes from long-time educator and Texas-based resource manager Natalie Brown. Building out from the center helps ensure you keep things even!

- Use Clothespins —Planning to make a student work bulletin board? Teach Starter resource creator and former classroom teacher Brittany Collins suggests gluing tacks to the back of clothespins to display student work easily on your bulletin boards. Bonus, Teach Starter's "student work coming” printables work as a perfect placeholder until your students’ work starts flowing in!
- Convert a Whiteboard to a Bulletin Board — Do you have a classroom whiteboard that's seen it's better days? Convert it to a bulletin board with a few simple changes! If it's magnetic, use magnet squares to help make your bulletin board paper stick. You can also buy magnetized borders to hang!
- Use a Permanent Marker to Hide Staples — Find a marker that matches the color of your cutouts, and poof, the staples disappear!
- Convert an Old Chalkboard to a Bulletin Board — If you have one of those old chalkboards in your room that's so marked up it can't be used, cover it in felt with the help of some hook and loop dots, and it's a bulletin board!
Bulletin boards be set up to serve countless purposes in the classroom. This"We're a Bright Bunch" board was designed to welcome students back to school.
How to Store Bulletin Board Borders
Bulletin board borders come in handy to make the edges of your board look neat and tidy and complete the look, but if you're anything like us, you have a LOT of them hanging around!
So how do you store all those borders to use in the future? Here are some of our favorite storage tips:
- Put clothespins on a clothes hanger, and clip each set of bulletin board borders to a single pin.
- Clean out empty frosting containers, roll up your borders, then slip them inside the container. A piece of painter's tape at the end of the roll will keep them secure, but make sure you label the container so you know what's inside!
- Use a binder clip to clip them together, and hang them from a hook in your classroom closet.
- Use a binder clip to clip them together, then string the collection of binder clips on a binder ring to keep them all together.
- Use holiday wreath bags.
- Roll them up, tape them off, then slip them into a hanging shoe organizer.
- Use an under-the-bed storage box to lay them flat, then slip the box at the bottom of your closet.
- Use pants hangers to hang each set of borders.
