Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle – Teaching About Earth Day for Kids

The school year is flying by, so let’s get you prepped for all those spring holidays in your classroom! We have created a fun and engaging sustainable living reader for first-grade and kindergarten students. Use this mini-book for an interactive read-aloud in the weeks surrounding the Earth Day or Arbor Day holidays.

This Help the Earth mini-book provides a fun, interactive way to help young students understand the three R’s of sustainability – reduce, reuse, and recycle. The set contains a printable mini-book for students to read, complete, and color.

Through this activity, students will increase their vocabulary and build skills in writing sentences with academic language.

Alternative Uses For Your Printable Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Book

We created this resource for circle time and reading lessons. In addition, we suggest these alternative uses to reinforce reading skills and new vocabulary words with your small group and full-class lessons:

  • Print on cardstock and assemble a small set of books for a reading center activity where students read the books to each other as partners.
  • Complete a booklet, print a copy for each student, and send them home as mini-readers to share with their family.
  • Have your students use the information they learned to create a reduce, reuse, recycle poster.
  • Have your strong readers create, color, and assemble their books, then pair them up with a Pre-K student for fun and easy reduce, reuse, recycle activities for preschoolers.
