Phonemic Awareness = The Foundation of Decoding

Phonemic awareness (the ability to identify and manipulate the individual sounds in words) is a vital stepping stone on the path to becoming a successful reader or writer. Before our students put pen to paper, we must immerse them in activities that enable them to say, isolate and identify the discrete sounds in words.

This set of peg task cards has been designed to help your students isolate and count the sounds in words containing two, three and four phonemes. The resource includes 24 peg cards, directions and an answer key.

How To Use These Counting Phonemes Peg Cards

  1. Print and cut out the cards. Thick card is recommended for added durability.
  2. Provide students with a set of task cards and some clothes pegs.
  3. Students say the word that corresponds to the picture on the card, then segment the word into its phonemes. For example, the word ‘pig’ has three phonemes: p-i-g.
  4. Students clip a clothes peg on the correct number of phonemes in the word from the choices at the bottom of the card.

To make this activity self-checking, put a star or any other symbol behind the correct number.
