Turn Your Students Into Savvy Statisticians With Our Data Collection Project

Engage your students in a hands-on exploration of statistics with our Data Collection Project! This 8-page worksheet set guides students through the entire process of developing a statistical question, gathering real-world data and presenting their findings in a meaningful way. Perfect for building critical thinking, communication and data literacy skills, this project turns maths into an interactive and collaborative experience.

In this data collection project, students will:

  • Develop a statistical question based on personal or class interests
  • Collect data by surveying classmates
  • Organise and analyse the data they gather
  • Choose and create a visual representation (column graph, pie chart, line graph, etc.)
  • Reflect on patterns, trends and surprising results
  • Present their findings to the class with confidence and clarity

Student Instructions for This Collecting Data Activity

Here is how your students can complete this collecting data activity!

Overview
Your class is starting a fun statistics project! You’ll get to ask a question, collect data to answer it and then share your findings. This project is all about using numbers to understand the world around you. You can investigate something that interests you—like favourite foods, screen time, pets or hobbies.

Task
Choose a question that can be answered by collecting data from a group of people. Plan how to collect your data, organise it, and display it in a graph or chart. Then, explain what your data tells you in a short report or presentation

Process

  1. Choose a topic you’re interested in. Some question ideas have been provided, but you may come up with your own if you prefer.
  2. Plan your investigation. Decide who or what you will collect data from, and how you will record it.
  3. Collect your data and organise it using the given table. Then, create a graph or chart to display your results clearly.
  4. Use the template to write about what your data shows. When you are ready, present the findings of your data collection project to the class.
