Developing Opinion Writing Skills Unit Plan – Grade 3 and Grade 4

10 x Lessons | Suitable for Grades: 3 - 4

This English unit addresses the genre of opinion writing; specifically, how to write a well-structured opinion piece.

It consists of 10 lessons of approximately 60 minutes duration.

The sequence of lessons and suggested time framesshould be regarded as a guide only; teachers should pace lessons in accordance with the individual learning needs of their class.

An independent writing task, which may couple as an assessment task, is included in the unit. The number of lessons required to complete this taskmay vary from class to class.

Objectives

  • To investigate point of view in relation to a situation or issue.
  • To identify and explore the organizational structure of an opinion piece.
  • To identify and explore the language features of an opinion piece.
  • To explore how modal words are used to express degrees of certainty in an opinion piece.
  • To explore how persuasive devices can be used to strengthen a point of view.
  • To use persuasive devices to build a convincing opinion about an issue.
  • To identify and use the correct paragraph structure when writing an opinion piece.
  • To use a writing prompt and scaffolding sheet to write an opinion piece in pairs.
  • To learn and apply proofreading and editing skills.
  • To independently write an opinion piece, using appropriate text structure, language and features.

Preparing for Learning

Opinion writing provides excellent opportunities for cross-curricular integration. Look for ways to meaningfully integrate opinion writing with other learning areas e.g. Science, Social Studies, Technology.

Prior to commencing the unit, develop an opinion writing wall in the classroom. Display texts, vocabulary and posters that will stimulate the students’ interest and assist in their learning throughout the unit. Expose the students to a variety of opinion pieces before and during the unit. Read and view opinion pieces such as letters to the editor, advertisements and campaign speeches. Provide the students with opportunities to read and respond to short opinion pieces.
